Thomas (Tom) Janicki is the Progress Energy / Gordon Hurbert Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). Janicki worked in industry for 15 years in the information systems and strategic planning fields before pursuing his PhD in information systems from Kent State University. At UNCW Janicki primarily teaches software development courses including the capstone experience for graduating seniors. He has over 40 peer reviewed publications with the primary focus areas being utilizing web-based technologies to enhance the traditional classroom-learning environment of information systems pedagogy and also determining employer needs and matching them to curriculum. He has received the best paper of the conference award twice.
At UNCW, he is the coordinator of the corporate advisory board for the IS and MS CSIS programs which brings 25 regional IT professionals together to improve the quality of the UNCW students and programs. He is also the coordinator of the annual Wilmington IT Exchange and Conference (WITX) each spring which brings together local professionals, students and faculty to exchange leading research and practical applications. Other UNCW activities include being the coordinator of the internship program for MIS majors and the business school’s Germany liaison where he takes a group of students to Germany each summer to study for one month. On campus he has received the university’s distinguished teaching award, the Cameron School of Business Service Award, and the university’s distinguished faculty award from the alumni association.
Service to the professional community includes publisher of two academic journals (Information Systems Education Journal and Journal of Information Systems Applied Research). He had been the chair of the then ISECON (now EDSIGCON/CONISAR Conferences) as well as on the board and president of AITP-EDSIG. He is currently serving as the meeting facilitator for the annual EDSIGCON/CONISAR conferences and is the treasurer of the Information Systems and Academic Computing Professionals which provides operational support for the conferences.
Finally, Janicki is currently the president of the St Judes Wilmington Foundation which works to spread a Christian message throughout the Wilmington NC region. He is also the past president and current trustee of the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation which provides scholarships and leadership training to college students.
Each year Fellows are inducted in honor of their sustained, long-term, meaningful and effective support of EDSIG in its ongoing mission to improve IS Education, mentor IS students, and foster the careers of IS faculty.
